Using a pseudonym, alias, or nom' de plume on your blog is common in today's society. Pen names and masked names are becoming quite the norm in a society where people would like to protect their privacy, and their identity. There are pros and cons of using pseudonyms and you should decide what may work best for you.
PROS 1. Privacy protection. Protect your personal information from potential stalkers and crazy people, who sadly do exist. You don't want them viewing photos of you and your kids and learning your shopping routines.
2. Protect your views and business from your career. Privacy of your personal life is a main "pro" in using an alias. For instance, you do not have to worry about expressing your private thoughts, political or religious views and having to worry about potential business associates frowning upon them. Your employer doesn't have to find out your personal views or if you go out to a party on Friday nights. What you do on your personal time should be your own business, but it is a proven fact that employers are reading Facebook, Blogs, and personal sites. Be careful by using the alias to protect yourself if this type of "subjective" content will exist on your blog.
3. Easy to change. A pseudonym is easy to change if your blog gets popular or you are at the point where you wish to reveal your real identity. You can "unveil" yourself at any given time.
CONS 1. Confusion on a personal level. It may cause some confusion in your friends and family who do wish to find your blog, and read it. This will be only temporary, until you tell them who you are writing under.
2. Havoc on the professional level. You may risk not obtaining proper credit for your author expertise or editorial work if credit is due. Since you are operational under a "faux" name it may deter you from your time in the spotlight. People that enjoy reading your blog, linking to your articles or forward you work may be doing so under the alias name, and no one will ever really know that it's really you!
So how do you decide?
You must weigh the pros and cons and determine which will fare better for you. If you are unsure, you can always start with a fake name and change it later when you feel more comfortable about the big wide world of blogging.
